Meet a Local Business

Commonplace Coffee

What makes your products or services unique? What will people get from your business that they won’t get elsewhere?

Commonplace Coffee is perhaps best known for our café locations in Pittsburgh and Indiana, PA. What may be less apparent are the roasting and wholesale services we offer. Our coffee program focuses on long-term contracts and relationally sourcing green coffee, paying at least 1.6x above fair trade pricing to support sustainability for all members of the supply chain. We also help local café owners, managers, and baristas expand their knowledge and hone their craft. The goal of our wholesale program is to fuel the Western PA coffee community by providing wholesale coffee, barista training, equipment service, café consultation, and mentorship. We love watching wholesale relationships blossom into long lasting friendships as our clients find success serving their communities.

What inspires your work?

At Commonplace, we live and work by the values “Made with Craft and Care” and “Solid Ground for All.” Everything we do can be distilled down to a desire to create a thoughtful and unmatched experience while seeking to support and uplift our community. We are so lucky to work with coffee, which acts as a bridge between people and as a catalyst for meaningful connection.

How can people best support you or your community as we recover from the pandemic?

There is a great deal of need that exists and many incredible organizations working tirelessly to assist those most affected by the pandemic. We encourage anyone who is able to get involved with and donate to organizations in their local community.

As far as supporting Commonplace, we are incredibly grateful for every single person who has walked through our doors, up to our windows, or placed an order online over this past year. Adapting to all of the pandemic-related changes has been tough and supporting small businesses has never been more important than it is now. So, shop small, tip generously, and support the local artists and makers in your community.

Are there any unique events, initiatives, sales, or opportunities at your store or community that people should be aware of?

The best way to stay up to date is via our social media channels.

Please provide any other information you want to share that these questions did not cover!

We just released Be The Bridge, a collaborative coffee with eight other Pennsylvania-based roasters. It’s an incredibly fun project with each roaster putting their own spin on the same coffee. $5 from the sale of each bag is being donated to Feeding Pennsylvania. It’s a wonderful opportunity to try different interpretations of the same coffee and give back to those facing food insecurity during this difficult time.
